Every 16th of July, Estepona is filled with emotion, tradition, and spirituality as it pays tribute to its patron saint, Our Virgen del Carmen, protector of sailors and a cherished symbol of the town’s deep connection with the sea.
This celebration is more than just a festivity – it’s a living expression of Estepona’s soul. From early morning, the streets are adorned with flowers, prayers, and promises, while local fishermen lovingly prepare the statue of the Virgin for her grand procession.
🚶‍♀️ Land procession: The day begins with a solemn mass at the Church of our Virgen del Carmen, followed by a procession through the town’s streets, accompanied by hundreds of devoted followers in prayer and song.
⛵ Sea procession: At sunset comes the most touching moment – the Virgin is carried to the shore and placed on a beautifully decorated traditional fishing boat. Dozens of boats, festooned with flags and flowers, follow her out to sea, sounding their horns in a moving show of reverence and celebration.
🎆 A magical finale: The day concludes with a breathtaking fireworks display over La Rada beach, lighting up the skies of Estepona in honour of its beloved Patroness of the Sea.
📸 Estepona doesn’t just celebrate a tradition – it celebrates its history, its faith, and its seafaring spirit.
🙏 Happy Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel!
